On or off the road, there is nothing holding the rider back from fully enjoying every outing. It also expresses how we have taken a proven, class-leading product and thoroughly updated it, both in terms of performance and styling, to realize the latest interpretation of what a superior dual-sport motorcycle should offer in the coming years.
A great number of engine components have been changed to comply with the latest regulations while still retaining the same proven level of performance that makes the DR-Z4S so compelling.
Examples include the following components:
Titanium intake valves and hollow sodium-filled exhaust valves: To reduce weight and realize greater freedom in designing optimized cam profiles
Intake and exhaust cams: To comply with Euro 5+ emissions standards
Valve springs: Spring load changed to support the increased intake valve lift
Cylinder head: To increase output and improve combustion stability
Dual spark plugs: To realize smooth power delivery, lower fuel consumption, lower emissions, more linear throttle response, easier engine start-up and a more stable idle
Piston: To reduce mechanical loss
Crankcases: To reduce pumping loss and oil mixing loss
Clutch assembly: To adopt the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS)
Magneto: To increase power generation efficiency
Tough twin-spar steel frame, seat rails and swingarm
While inheriting the precise, nimble handling and easy manoeuvrability that are highly acclaimed on the current generation, the new DR-Z4S adopts a newly developed twin-spar frame designed to enhance stability and instill confidence by responding faithfully to the rider’s will. The aim is to make the DR-Z4S even more effective on twisty forest trails, and to make the DR-Z4S perform brilliantly on the circuit as a supermoto model.
The frame is formed from steel pipe that makes it rigid, strong and supple enough to handle rough surfaces. It also absorbs shocks well enough to reduce rider fatigue. Likewise, the lightweight aluminium seat rails are plenty strong enough to support the rider well, even on rough terrain. The lightweight aluminium swingarm and its unique shape help improve tracking and rear suspension response, contributing to a smooth and comfortable ride.
Dedicated suspension tuning
Adjustable KYB inverted front forks with a long 280 mm suspension stroke and KYB rear suspension with 296 mm of rear wheel travel provide stability and precise handling. The settings are tailored to respond faithfully to your intention when riding off road, for example when taking a run on twisty forest trails. Both the front and rear suspension offer compression and rebound you to set the suspension best match your preference or the usage conditions.
Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.)
S.I.R.S. features a collection of advanced electronic rider assist systems that help optimize performance characteristics to suit your changing riding needs and preferences. From this collection, the new DR-Z4S/SM adopts Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS), the Suzuki Traction Control System (STSC), Ride-by-Wire Electronic Throttle System, ABS with Rear ABS OFF mode, and the Suzuki Easy Start System. By realizing a more controllable, predictable and less tiring riding experience, S.I.R.S. lets you ride with greater confidence, on or off the road.
Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS)
Select freely between three modes that change power characteristics to match varying riding conditions or your preferences for any given outing. While all three modes ultimately deliver maximum engine output, fine control over the level of response and torque output as you open the throttle empowers you to ride with greater confidence. The settings for each mode are meticulously tuned and thoroughly tested to deliver optimum performance.
Mode A provides the sharpest response as the throttle is opened. Tuned to deliver exciting acceleration and fully leverage the engine’s power, it is well suited for enjoying aggressive runs on good surfaces.
Mode B features a more linear curve with softer throttle response. The aim is to deliver a satisfying balance of settings that make a good fit for a broad range of riding styles and road conditions.
Mode C aims to prioritize comfort by offering the softer throttle response and more gentle torque characteristics. This setting is a good choice when riding on loose or otherwise slippery surfaces.
Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS)
STCS helps prevent rear wheel spin, enabling you to better control the bike in diverse and varying conditions. This reduces stress and fatigue, while also instilling greater confidence. Freely select between two standard on-road modes, G (Gravel) mode, or opt to turn the system off. With settings for each model specifically tuned to match its respective tire and suspension configuration, STCS provides optimized performance on both the DR-Z4S and the DR-Z4SM.
Note: Suzuki Traction Control System is not a substitute for the rider’s throttle control. It cannot prevent loss of traction due to excessive speed when the rider enters a turn and/or applies the brakes. Neither can it prevent the front wheel from losing traction.
Fuel injection
The change from a carburettor to a fuel injection system makes the engine more tenacious and controllable when riding at low speeds on rough surfaces or twisty forest trails. By helping to achieve the ideal fuel-air ratio, the fuel injection system also results in smoother output characteristics, better response, easier starts, and improved usability at higher elevations and in cold weather. The system’s 10-hole fuel injector helps achieve optimal fuel atomization for better combustion efficiency and lower fuel consumption.
Optimization of the piston’s ovality and skirt shape has achieved both a reduction in mechanical loss and smoother, quieter engine operation.
Dual spark plugs, New piston design
The DR-Z4SM utilizes two iridium spark plugs, which feature heightened spark strength, within the engine’s single cylinder. The result is improved combustion efficiency at low rpm and smoother power delivery. Specific benefits include more linear throttle response, lower fuel consumption, lower emissions, easier engine start-up, and a more stable idle.
New cam profiles
The profiles of both the intake and exhaust cams have been optimized so the engine delivers improved low-speed torque, tenacious staying power at low rpm, and a satisfying punch to output at high rpm. The intake cam increases intake air volume by increasing maximum lift and improves efficiency at low rpm by optimizing timing, while the exhaust cam shortens the valve overlap period by changing the working angle. Each of these changes contributes significantly to enhancing output performance and reducing emissions.
High-performance intake and exhaust valves
Two lightweight titanium intake valves and a pair of hollow sodium-filled exhaust valves contribute to maximizing combustion efficiency and performance. By reducing weight, they allow greater freedom in designing cam profiles optimized for both power output and emissions. The hollow sodium-filled exhaust valves help reduce temperature in the combustion chamber, which not only results in better loading efficiency and a better feeling, but also contributes to improving durability.
Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS)
Tuned specifically for the DR-Z4S, the assist function settings were painstakingly designed and tested to focus on controllability and positive clutch engagement both on and off the road. The assist function leverages a precision-engineered cam to engage the clutch sleeve hub and pressure disc together and efficiently transfer torque to the rear wheel under acceleration, all while using softer clutch springs. As a result, it reduces the amount of required operating force and improves operation.
The slipper clutch partially disengages when downshifting to decelerate to mitigate the effect of engine braking. By helping to limit rear tire hopping and providing smoother deceleration, this function enables the rider to shift down with greater confidence and maintain better control.
New exhaust system
The new exhaust pipe complies with noise regulations and, while featuring a double-wall muffler design that helps protect the rider’s legs from extreme heat, also contributes to a slim body profile. Both the exhaust pipe and muffler adopt stainless steel, which helps to greatly enhance the overall visual appeal and look of quality.
The exhaust system also features a dual-stage catalytic converter* and newly added O2 sensor that help satisfy Euro 5+ emissions standards.
Ride-by-wire throttle body
The engine is fed by a 42 mm bore electronic-controlled throttle body. This helps achieve a better balance between idling speed control and power output characteristics, while also contributing to compliance with Euro 5+ emissions standards. Another benefit of the finer control it provides is more controllable behaviour that can be customized to best match the type of ride and preferred riding style for any given outing.
New air cleaner box and inlet
Every aspect of the new air cleaner box design, down to its capacity and outlet shape, aims to reduce intake air resistance, while the length of the inlet tube and diameter of its mouth are designed to achieve the best balance between intake air noise and output feeling to generate sharp throttle response and powerful low-speed torque. As with the current model, the lid is positioned on the side for easy filter replacement.
Handlebars and mirrors
Light, strong and flexible, the tapered aluminium handlebars fitted with half-waffle grips provide a solid grip, positive control, and help reduce fatigue by absorbing shocks from rough surfaces.
The mirrors adopt a tough-looking new parallelogram design.
Grippy tyres
The DR-Z4S rides on a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wirespoked wheel shod with IRC GP-410 dual purpose tube tires (80/100-21M/C at the front;
120/80-18M/C at the rear) that feature a custom-engineered interior structure exclusive to the DR-Z4S.
Brakes
Single front (DR-Z4S: 270 mm, DR-Z4SM: 310 mm) and 240 mm rear disc brakes provide sure and stable stopping power. Axial mount calipers provide resistance to vibration when riding over rough terrain.
Comfortable seat
Optimized seat width, improves comfort when riding on rough terrain or trails, and the seat’s highly durable design supports the rider well when shifting body weight.
Compact 8.7 litre fuel tank
The fuel tank features a flush, light-weight design with a capacity of 8.7 litres.
Sturdy footpegs
Wider footpegs provide solid footing and stability when negotiating trails, whether standing or sitting, and also enhance the model’s tough image.
Aluminium under cover
Fitted with an aluminium under cover as standard equipment that protects the engine and matches the model’s tough image.
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) contributes to more stable braking by helping prevent the wheels from locking up, even under hard braking. The ABS unit itself features a compact, lightweight design that contributes to nimble handling.
The DR-Z4SM lets you switch off ABS at the rear wheel, giving you the option to match your preferred control method when braking on gravel or other loose surfaces. Front ABS remains active full time.
Gravel Mode (G Mode)
G mode allows a limited amount of tyre slip when riding on unpaved surfaces so the bike remains controllable, while at the same time delivering the consistent power output you want for exploring unpaved roads and country trails with greater confidence. The dedicated setting for the DR-Z4S aims at being effective not only on flat dirt but also on undulating terrain, while the DR-Z4SM setting focuses more on flat-dirt conditions, allowing a little more spin that lets you really experience its sporty motard character with greater confidence.
Suzuki Easy Start System
This system lets the rider start the motorcycle with one quick press of the starter button. There is no need to pull in the clutch lever when the transmission is in neutral, and the starter motor automatically disengages the instant the engine fires up. As a function used every time the engine is started, removing the bother of the above operations makes the riding experience more pleasurable and convenient.
Advanced functionality extends to electric equipment
From the advanced functional and aesthetic design of the LED lighting to the informational wealth and clear presentation offered by the full LCD instrument panel, the DR-Z4SM light the way to an exciting future for dual-sport and supermoto motorcycling.
Full LCD display
The newly designed LCD instrument panel is both light and compact. It features a clearly legible display that not only supplies critical real-time operating status information, but also keeps you informed of the settings for the respective on-board systems.
Handlebar switches
The ergonomic switch layout maximizes operating ease so you can access all controls while remaining focused on riding. Select modes or change settings for each of the advanced electronic rider assist systems by simply operating the MODE and UP/DOWN switches on the left handlebar.
LED headlight and position lights
Both the high and low beams are incorporated into one bright LED projector headlight that is compact, light and durable. LED position lights integrated right into the turn signal assemblies help round out the functional yet minimalistic lighting scheme.
LED rear combination light
The rear combination light and license plate light both employ compact LEDs that create a highly visible and striking lighting scheme, contributing to the futuristic appeal of the tough, modern styling.
